Looking for the Golden Ticket? Come on In.
Recently, I’ve had the pleasure of watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The original one before Johnny Depp made his version. If you know the premise, there’s a golden ticket (5 to be exact) and it gains you admittance to Wonkas secret factory of delicious candy. Well, sorry to say, I don’t have a ticket to a secret factory, but here is an excellent template to use for writing your federal resume. This came from a recent job announcement that I was looking at and it gives you all of the points necessary for writing your work experiences.
Note that it states two critically important objectives about your work history that should be met:
- Your resume serves as the basis for qualification determinations and must highlight your most relevant and significant work experience and education as it relates to this job opportunity.
- Please be clear and specific when describing your work history as we cannot make assumptions regarding your experience.
I’ve received some emails that said “Coach Fed, you’re nuts. The idea that my federal resume should be 5 pages long is absurd!” BUT they did it. The above is exactly what I showed them in response to their 4 bullet points on their past three jobs. Guess what they did?
Once again, would I ever tell you this is necessary for the private world…not ever. Which to me makes very little sense. I had three interviews for one job. A grand total of 2.5 hrs of my life dedicated to chatting with complete strangers where my entire intention is to WOW them with what I’ve done to learn about their company and brief them on how my last positions translate to this new one. They know who I am because they’ve seen my “resume” and get a great read on my capabilities. That’s crap. They know nothing about me, what my previous job duties entailed, or whether or not I’m actually capable of working at a high level, had they read my Federal Resume, it’s possible that the interview would have gone much faster and not been 2.5 hrs of their time wasted.
Now it’s up to you. You can practice what I preach and spend a good couple of hours building your USAJOBS.GOV resume online or…..we can talk and I can do it for you while you sit in the sun, sipping extra strong margaritas, and watching the palm trees grow.
